Thaksin promises free press<\/p>\n
THAILAND: Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, embroiled in a row
\nwith media critics, promised on Monday to keep the Thai press
\nfree and said recent actions against a magazine had been taken
\nnot by his government but by the police.<\/p>\n
Thaksin said his administration had not been involved at first
\nin the suspension of visas of two reporters of the Hong Kong-
\nbased Far Eastern Economic Review, but it had been responsible
\nfor reinstating their visas later.<\/p>\n
Thaksin also said he knew nothing about a confidential
\ninvestigation into the financial affairs of several of his
\nopponents in the Thai press, which critics have said was an
\nattempt by his administration to dig up dirt to mount a dirty
\ntricks campaign.<\/p>\n
"It shocked me when I learned that such as thing had happened.
\nI asked my officials, 'How could such a thing happen? Why did
\nthis happen?'," Thaksin said in an interview. --Reuters<\/p>",
