Thais seize animals smuggled from Indonesia<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (Reuter): Thai customs officials said yesterday they
\nhad seized a large consignment of animals smuggled from
\nIndonesia, including dozens of endangered crocodiles and exotic
\nbirds.<\/p>\n
The animals were found stuffed into cages and boxes aboard a
\ncargo ship which arrived at Samut Sakorn port, just south of
\nBangkok, late last week, officials said.<\/p>\n
Many of the animals were found dead, the officials said.<\/p>\n
Among the survivors were 70 young salt water crocodiles, which
\nwere apparently destined for breeders in Thailand who would raise
\nthe animals for their skins.<\/p>\n
Also found were 40 cockatoos, one emu, two wallabies and four
\nlarge, crested birds which the Thai officials were unable to
\nidentify.<\/p>\n
Senior customs department official Chavalit Metheekul told
\nreporters the animals would be cared for by Bangkok zoo and the
\nforestry department until they were returned to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Thai captain of the ship which brought the animals to
\nThailand, the I.M.G. 3, was arrested on charges of violating laws
\non the international trade in wildlife, Chavalit said.<\/p>\n
Thailand is a signatory of the CITES treaty on the trade of
\nendangered species.<\/p>",
