Thailand vows 'eye for an eye' against Malaysia in SEA Games<\/p>\n
JAKARTA, (JP): Thailand has vowed to avenge the 4-1 loss it
\nsuffered to Malaysia last Tuesday, saying it is waiting to unveil
\na "secret weapon" against the Malaysian team.<\/p>\n
"I'm convinced we can beat Malaysia in the next SEA Games,"
\nsaid team manager Vanchai Sansaniyakulvilai on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, renowned for its
\nattractive women, will host the 14th Southeast Asian Games in
\nDecember 1995.<\/p>\n
Chiang Mai was named host of the biennial sporting event at a
\nSEA Games Federation congress in Singapore in conjunction with
\nthe 13th SEA Games held in the Lion City last year.<\/p>\n
Vanchai's conviction had nothing to do with his team's ability
\nto outplay than the Malaysians, and will depend on his secret
\nweapon.<\/p>\n
"We have prepared beautiful women in Chiang Mai to beat
\nMalaysia," Vanchai said, to the roaring laughter of reporters
\npresent at the Thomas Cup - Uber Cup pre-match interview at the
\nJakarta Hilton International hotel.<\/p>\n
Malaysia's team manager, Punch Gunalan, only laughed upon
\nhearing Vanchai's joke, but Vanchai took it as a sign that
\nMalaysia would bow to Thailand.<\/p>\n
"You see," he said. "Gunalan is afraid of our secret weapon,
\nisn't he?"<\/p>\n
IBF<\/p>\n
While Vanchai displayed typical Thai good-naturedness in
\ndealing with his team's poor performance, Titus Kurniadi, one of
\nIndonesia's noted badminton figures, was in a melancholy mood.<\/p>\n
Titus, chairman of the 1994 Thomas Cup - Uber Cup organizing
\ncommittee, will see his membership with the International
\nBadminton Federation (IBF) end this season.<\/p>\n
Titus began his IBF career as chairman of the Thomas Cup -
\nUber Cup organizing committee here in 1986.<\/p>\n
"I have been an IBF member for eight years and 17 days," Titus
\nsaid Saturday as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
Titus has been head of IBF's Finance and Business committee.
\nPreviously he served as deputy chairman of the federation.<\/p>\n
"There are times when people have to resign before they are
\nasked to do so," he explained.<\/p>\n
Titus, who was head of the foreign affairs committee in the
\nBadminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) under Try Sutrisno's
\nchairmanship, was not among those elected for PBSI's 1993-1997
\nterm under Soerjadi.<\/p>\n
PBSI has nominated maestro Rudy Hartono to replace him at the
