Thailand, Vietnam hold talks<\/p>\n
HANOI (Reuter): Vietnam and Thailand, involved in a recent
\nnaval clash over fishing rights in the Gulf of Thailand, have
\nmade progress on delimiting boundaries in the area and an
\nagreement is within sight, Vietnam says.<\/p>\n
Officials held five days of talks this week in Ho Chi Minh
\nCity about the two countries' overlapping continental shelves,
\nthe official Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported on Saturday
\nnight.<\/p>\n
\"They noted with satisfaction the progress of the meeting and
\nthat at this meeting the two sides' points of view moved much
\ncloser than those in previous meetings,\" VNA said.<\/p>\n
\"Both delegations were of the view that a final agreement
\ncould reasonably be predicted soon,\" it said.<\/p>\n
Clashes over fishing rights are common in the gulf, where the
\nThai and Vietnamese continental shelves overlap for about 6,000
\nsquare kilometers.<\/p>\n
Two Vietnamese sailors and a Thai fisherman were killed on May
\n31 in a clash involving gunboats from both countries when Vietnam
\nseized six Thai trawlers it said were fishing in Vietnamese
\nwaters.<\/p>\n
Vietnamese authorities have not subsequently indicated whether
\nthe Thai boats and fishermen were still held.<\/p>\n
