Thailand to build 'peace zone'<\/p>\n
THAILAND: Thailand's government plans to set up "peace zones"
\nin southern provinces to curb mounting unrest that has been
\nlinked to Islamic separatists, a minister said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The deadly violence in the majority-Muslim region of mainly
\nBuddhist Thailand has flared again in recent weeks despite
\nefforts to stem the attacks on security forces, government
\nofficials, civil servants and civilians.<\/p>\n
"We will announce a peace zone, an area that should not have
\nmuch violence so that people can feel comfortable," Defense
\nMinister Thammarak Issarangkura Na Ayutthaya told reporters.<\/p>\n
"We hope to start by August, and Betong district will be a
\npilot peace district," he said. He did not provide details of how
\nthe zones would be implemented.<\/p>\n
Betong is the southernmost tip of Thailand, in Yala province
\nwhich along with Narathiwat and Pattani provinces has borne the
\nbrunt of the violence.<\/p>\n
Thailand's deep south along the Malaysian border has been
\nroiled by an Islamic separatist insurgency that has left more
\nthan 710 people dead since a bloody attack on an army weapons
