Thailand, S'pore support summit<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Reuter): Thailand and Singapore support Japan's
\ncall for summit meetings at least once a year with the
\nAssociation of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) to deepen ties with the
\nregion, the Thai foreign minister said yesterday.<\/p>\n
"We both support Japan," Prachuab Chaiyasan told a briefing
\nfollowing talks with Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.
\n"We think that ASEAN-10 in the future will be a very good region
\nfor Japan's investments."<\/p>\n
ASEAN, which groups Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the
\nPhilippines, Singapore, Brunei and Vietnam, has agreed to admit
\nLaos, Cambodia and Burma together at some time in the future,
\nmaking 10 members in total.<\/p>\n
Some analysts have suggested ASEAN may admit the three states
\nthis year to coincide with its 30th anniversary.<\/p>\n
Last month Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said in
\nSingapore it was necessary to strengthen policy dialog between
\nJapan and ASEAN at various levels because of the increasing
\nimportance of the grouping.<\/p>",
