Thailand denies Myanmar claim<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (AP): In a brief war of words underlying fragile
\nbilateral relations, Thailand has denounced a claim in a state-
\nrun Myanmar newspaper accusing Thailand of profiting from
\nsheltering refugees from Myanmar.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday the New Light of Myanmar newspaper, a mouthpiece
\nfor Myanmar's ruling military regime, accused Thailand of
\nwelcoming refugees for political gain and to make profits from
\nblack market trade, not humanitarian reasons.<\/p>\n
Oum Maolanon, the Thai Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman,
\nretorted that Thailand had faced a big burden in taking care of
\nthe refugees who had been driven from their homes by 15 years of
\npolitical and economic crisis inside Myanmar.<\/p>\n
Thailand shares a long border of over 2,000 kilometers with
\nMyanmar, also known as Burma.<\/p>\n
More than 120,000 refugees, mostly ethnic KarenS who have fled
\nyears of fighting between Myanmar government troops and ethnic
\nrebels, are encamped in five Thai border provinces.<\/p>",
