Thai supremo visits China<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (AFP): Thai armed forces supreme commander Gen.
\nWattanachai Wuthisiri left Bangkok yesterday for Beijing on a
\ncourtesy visit, official sources said.<\/p>\n
No details were given about the 48-hour trip by Wattanachai,
\nwho was appointed military supremo last October. But Chinese
\nsources said he would meet People's Liberation Army Commander
\nGen. Zhang Wannian who invited him.<\/p>\n
Relations between China and Thailand improved in 1979 when
\nBeijing agreed to end backing for the Thai Communist Party in
\nexchange for Bangkok's support for the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia,
\noverthrown that year by the Vietnamese army.<\/p>\n
The Thai army, which gets most of its arms from the United
\nStates, began purchasing Chinese weapons in 1986. It has since
\nbecome one of Beijing's leading customers for armored vehicles,
\nartillery and has bought six frigates.<\/p>",
