        "content": "<p>Thai soldier loses leg in landmine blast on Cambodia: Thailand\nmilitary<\/p>\n<p>According to the Thai military\u2019s preliminary examination, the\nlandmine was buried deep in clay and covered with leaves, suggesting it\nwas not newly laid.<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK: A Thai soldier lost his leg on Friday (Feb 27) in a landmine\nblast on the country\u2019s contested frontier with Cambodia, where a shaky\ntruce is holding after months of cross-border clashes, Thailand\u2019s\nmilitary said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne soldier has been critically wounded and lost his right leg after\nstepping on a landmine,\u201d the Thai army said in a statement, adding the\nincident took place around dawn in the border province of Surin.<\/p>\n<p>However the Thai military said a \u201cpreliminary examination\u201d of\nFriday\u2019s blast \u201cindicates that the landmine was buried deep in clay and\ncovered with leaves, suggesting it was not newly laid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand and Cambodia have repeatedly accused each other of violating\nsuccessive truces with cross-border gun and mortar fire, while Bangkok\nhas alleged Phnomh Penh\u2019s soldiers have laid fresh landmines on\ncontested soil.<\/p>\n<p>Since last summer dozens have been killed in waves of conflict along\nthe nations\u2019 jungle-bound border, disputed for more than a century since\nits demarcation in the French colonial era.<\/p>\n<p>More than a million civilians were displaced along the 800km frontier\nat the height of the fighting in July and December, before a tentative\nceasefire took effect.<\/p>\n<p>Cambodia\u2019s border is still littered with unexploded ordinance dating\nback to separate conflicts decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>Under the December truce, Cambodia and Thailand pledged to cease\nfire, freeze troop movements and cooperate on demining efforts along the\nfrontier.<\/p>",
