Thai soccer boss out over beer<\/p>\n
CHIANG MAI, Thailand (AFP): The \"beer war\" at the 18th
\nSoutheast Asian Games cost the Thai soccer boss his job -- for
\none day.<\/p>\n
Team manager Thawatchai Sajjakul and some of his reserve
\nplayers were seen wearing warm-up suits at their match Sunday
\nthat were made by the Umbro company and which bore the name
\n\"Singha,\" a popular Thai beer.<\/p>\n
That angered two of the games' biggest sponsors, Carlsberg,
\nthe European beer giant, and Football Thai (FBT), makers of the
\nofficial sportswear for the nine-day contest, the official games
\nnewspaper Sawasdee reported.<\/p>\n
Both sponsors accused Thawatchai of breach of contract and
\nthreatened to pull out of the games, which would have cost the
\norganizers a couple million dollars in fees.<\/p>\n
Thai chief of mission Charouck Arirachakaran fired Thawatchai
\non Monday.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Thawatchai submitted a written apology to the
\nrepresentatives of Carlsberg and FBT at a meeting with officials
\nof the Thai Olympic Committee and the Football Association of
\nThailand. The two sponsors then withdrew their complaint and
\nThawatchai was reinstated.<\/p>",
