        "content": "<p>Thai, Singapore hotel chains tie up with Bakrie<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): General Hotels Management of Singapore and<br>\nSoneva Pavilion of Thailand agreed here yesterday to operate<br>\nhotels and tourism resorts now being developed by the Bakrie<br>\nGroup in Lampung.<\/p>\n<p>The two companies signed the agreements with Bakrie Group&apos;s PT<br>\nKrakatau Lampung Tourism Development Corporation, which is now<br>\ndeveloping the 350-hectare resort site in Kalianda, South<br>\nLampung.<\/p>\n<p>Bangkok-based Soneva Pavilion Hotels and Resorts agreed to<br>\ndevelop and manage two luxury resorts at the resort called the<br>\nKalianda adventure and nature resort.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will operate Kalianda&apos;s first resort, which is expected to<br>\nbe completed in December this year,&quot; Soneva&apos;s managing director<br>\nBernhard Bohnenberger said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The site would be a nature theme resort site, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bohnenberger said Soneva also planned to invest 20 percent<br>\nstake in the Kalianda hotel resort development, as was stated in<br>\nits letter of intent submitted to PT Krakatau. He declined to<br>\ndisclose his company&apos;s investment in the project.<\/p>\n<p>The company would start the construction of another luxury<br>\nresort at the same site next year, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We also intend to find other investors to cooperate on the<br>\nproject with us,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Soneva Pavilion, which operates hotels and resorts in<br>\nThailand, the Maldives and Vietnam, have several ongoing projects<br>\nin Indonesia and other South East Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Singapore-based General Hotels Management (GHM) agreed to<br>\nprovide a technical assistance agreement for the design and<br>\nconstruction of Serai-Lampung Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>GHM&apos;s director in Indonesia Mark Edleson said the hotel&apos;s<br>\nconstruction was scheduled to start early next year, and would be<br>\ncompleted in mid 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel would have 120 rooms, two restaurants and a spa, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>GHM operates two types of hotels, namely the Serai and Chedi.<br>\nSome of the resort hotels it operates are Chedi Ubud in Bali,<br>\nChedi Bandung (West Java) and Chedi-Phuket in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>National resort operator PT Kelola Sarana Wisata (Kelawi),<br>\nalso agreed yesterday to be part of the resorts management.<\/p>\n<p>Kelawi&apos;s president Herman Hartomo said his company would<br>\nmanage several aspects of the resort such as the security, the<br>\nrestaurants, and discotheques.<\/p>\n<p>PT Krakatau Lampung Tourism Corporation (KLTD) is 90 percent<br>\nowned by the Bakrie Group, while the remaining 10 percent is<br>\nowned by the provincial government of Lampung.<\/p>\n<p>The joint venture was established to develop a 350 hectare<br>\nsite in Lampung into a world-class integrated resort, which would<br>\neventually contain 20 cluster hotels and three saleable<br>\ndevelopments such as golf areas and camping grounds.<\/p>\n<p>KLTD&apos;s project director Chairul Hakim said yesterday his<br>\ncompany expected to invest US$50 million in the first phase of<br>\nthe development.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy percent of the funds came from bank loans, and the<br>\nremaining 30 percent from the company&apos;s own funds, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The number of foreign and domestic tourists in Lampung reached<br>\n397,580 last year, a 7.11 percent rise from the previous year.<br>\nThe government expects a 15 percent increase in tourists to the<br>\narea this year.
