Thai shrimps gain from RI problems<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (Reuters): Thailand, the world's top shrimp exporter,
\nstands to benefit from the problems faced by the shrimp farming
\nindustry in competitor Indonesia, industry sources said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Analysts said that Indonesia's world market share may have
\nfallen to around five percent from 20 percent since last
\nNovember-December because of a sharp drop in production as its
\ncurrency crisis made it expensive to import feed.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has been the world's third largest exporter.<\/p>\n
India, the world's second biggest exporter, would make inroads
\ninto the lucrative Japanese market where Indonesia had a foothold
\npreviously, analysts said.<\/p>\n
But Thailand stood to fill the vacuum created in other
\nIndonesian markets for medium-sized shrimp such as Singapore,
\nHong Kong and Taiwan, analysts said<\/p>\n
The United States, which bought 38,000 tons of Thai shrimp
\nlast year, will remain Thailand's major shrimp buyer, they said.<\/p>",
