Thai sailors poaching in RI water<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Thai Ambassador to Indonesia Chaiyong Satjiponan
\nadmitted Monday that many sailors from his country were fishing
\nillegally in Indonesian waters, but defended them, saying that
\nthey were not aware of the borders between the two countries.<\/p>\n
"The issue (poaching) should be resolved as soon as possible
\nby the two countries," Chaiyong was quoted by Antara as saying
\nafter a meeting with East Kalimantan Deputy Governor Yurnalis
\nNgayoh in Samarinda on Monday.<\/p>\n
"We from the Thai Embassy and the Indonesian government are
\nstill trying to resolve the problem and hope to find the best
\nsolution for both countries," he said.<\/p>\n
Marine and Fisheries Minister Rokhmin Dahuri said earlier that
\nmore than one million tons of fish worth up to US$3 billion were
\nstolen by foreign fishermen every year.<\/p>\n
Of the one million tons, 800,000 tons were stolen by Thai
\nsailors, while the remainder was plundered by fishermen from the
\nPhilippines, Malaysia, and China. --Antara<\/p>",
