        "content": "<p>Thai rice exports boom<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand is expecting rice exports next year to<br>\nreach record levels because of poor weather in other producing<br>\ncountries and the weakening baht, reports said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>A commerce ministry official said rice exports were enjoying<br>\nmuch higher earnings since the baht was floated in July, the<br>\nNation newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>The commerce ministry predicted six percent growth in rice<br>\nexports next year to a record 5.3 million tons worth 53 billion<br>\nbaht, the reports said.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign trade department director general Pracha<br>\nJarutrakulchai predicted exports this year would reach 5.1<br>\nmillion tons and earn 59.9 billion baht, up 27 percent on an<br>\nearlier projection of 47 billion baht, the Nation said.<\/p>\n<p>The commerce ministry official said the El Nio weather<br>\nphenomenon would affect rice production in importing countries<br>\nsuch as Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as in Africa,<br>\nLatin America and the Middle East.<\/p>",
