        "content": "<p>Thai-RI relations in 1999-2000<\/p>\n<p>On the auspicious occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Thai-<br>\nIndonesian diplomatic relations, on Nov. 25, 1999, on behalf of<br>\nthe Indonesian Government, Dr. I Gede Ngurah Anom, Director-<br>\nGeneral for Culture handed over, to the Thai Ambassador, two<br>\nportraits of Their Majesties the King and Queen, which were among<br>\nthe masterpieces painted in 1961 by the late renowned Indonesian<br>\nartist, Raden Basuki Abdullah.<\/p>\n<p>The two portraits were subsequently presented to His Majesty<br>\nthe King on His 72nd Birthday Anniversary. This signified the<br>\ngesture of goodwill and friendship of the Republic of Indonesia<br>\ntoward our beloved King which were greatly appreciated by the<br>\nloyal Thai citizens.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 30, 2000, Prof. Dr. H.R.H. Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol<br>\nwas an official Guest of the Indonesian Government in Jakarta, to<br>\nofficiate the Executive Seminar on Environmental Toxicology<br>\njointly organized by Chulabhorn Research Institute, Thailand and<br>\nEnvironmental Impact Management Agency of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Intercountry visits<\/p>\n<p>No less than three times has President Abdurrahman Wahid been<br>\nto Thailand, in one year. On one occasion, he had an audience<br>\nwith His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Foreign Affairs Alwi Shihab has paid several<br>\nvisits to Thailand, while his counterpart, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan,<br>\nMinister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand has reciprocated<br>\naccordingly. Exchanges of visit and bilateral discussions were<br>\nalso made by other concerned ministers of both countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Commanders of the Armed Forces of the two countries have<br>\nmade reciprocal visits; joint exercises and trainings were<br>\norganized by the two armies, in Indonesia and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Having set up the first \"Thai Room\" at the Museum of North<br>\nSumatra and the first \"Indonesian corner\" at Thaksin University's<br>\nKoh Yo Museum, Songkhla province, it was further agreed, on the<br>\nreciprocal basis, to establish a second \"Thai Room\" at the<br>\nNational Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Several Thai Films Festivals jointly organized by the Thai<br>\nEmbassy and Indonesian organizers, in Jakarta and Yogyakarta,<br>\nhave been tremendously successful.<\/p>\n<p>Language studies<\/p>\n<p>Having assigned Thai diplomats to teach Thai language at the<br>\nUniversity of Indonesia's School of Letters from September to<br>\nDecember 2000, a Thai lecturer from Srinakarinwirot University<br>\nhas accepted the Embassy's invitation and is currently giving<br>\nThai language course at the School.<\/p>\n<p>The first essay competition, organized by the Embassy, on the<br>\ntopic related to Thai-Indonesian relations has attracted over 119<br>\nIndonesian students, of which the four winning students were<br>\ninvited to participate in an educational and cultural tour of<br>\nThailand from Aug. 8 to Aug. 14, 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Following the visits of Thai and Indonesian Governors<br>\nconcerned, several Letters of Intent were signed in 2000<br>\nexpressing the common desire to establish sister-city relations<br>\nbetween Jakarta\/Bangkok and North Sumatra\/Songkhla, while other<br>\nsimilar undertakings are in the making, hence the broadening<br>\ncontacts between various provinces in the cultural and commercial<br>\nfields are to be materialized by next year.<\/p>\n<p>Business contacts<\/p>\n<p>In August 2000, the Thai Embassy and North Sumatra Chamber of<br>\nCommerce and Industry jointly led 40 Indonesian businesspeople<br>\nfrom North Sumatra and Riau provinces to visit southern Thailand<br>\nand Bangkok, to explore business and trade opportunities. The<br>\nparticipating Indonesian businesspeople had contacts with their<br>\nThai counterparts in the fields of fisheries, agribusiness, spare<br>\nparts for vehicles, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Having initially agreed on a draft Agreement between Thailand<br>\nand Indonesia for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the<br>\nPrevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income, it<br>\nis hoped that when it becomes a formal Agreement, it will further<br>\ncontribute to mutual economic interests, facilitating business<br>\ntransactions between the private sectors of both countries in a<br>\nvery near future.<\/p>",
