Thai premier to visit China<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (AP): Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra begins a
\nthree-day visit to China Monday, with topics ranging from
\nsatellites to drug trafficking on the agenda.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by several ministers and business executives,
\nThaksin will meet with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, who visited
\nThailand in May. The two countries enjoy close ties.<\/p>\n
The Nation newspaper said Sunday that Thaksin, who made his
\nfortune in telecommunications, will seek a compromise on the
\npositioning of Thailand's iPSTAR communications satellite and
\nChina's AsiaSat 4 satellite.<\/p>\n
The Thai satellite, which will go into commercial service in
\n2003, is a project of Shin Satellite, in which Thaksin's son is
\nthe major shareholder.<\/p>\n
The Nation said the Chinese side will be asked to back down to
\nresolve the issue of orbits. AsiaSat has been awarded what iPSTAR
\nregards as the optimal slot for its satellite.<\/p>\n
Thaksin will pay courtesy calls on President Jiang Zemin and
\nLi Peng, chairman of the National People's Congress during his
\nvisit.<\/p>",
