Thai PM to meet Soros<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (Reuters): Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai is
\nexpected to meet international financier George Soros during a
\nvisit to the United States, a local newspaper reported on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
The Nation newspaper said Chuan was due to meet Soros to
\nexchange views on the Asian economic crisis and to talk about
\ninvestment opportunities in Thailand.<\/p>\n
Citing an "informed source", the Nation said Soros had
\nexpressed an appreciation of the Chuan government and said he
\nadmired the prime minister.<\/p>\n
"He would like to show his support for a democratic Thailand,"
\nthe source said.<\/p>\n
Thai financial officials said late last year they had lobbied
\nSoros to invest in the country, which is suffering its worst
\neconomic crisis in decades.<\/p>\n
Thai policy towards Soros differs sharply from that of
\nMalaysia, where Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has cast the
\nbillionaire financier as the villain in his country's economic
\ntroubles.<\/p>\n
Chuan will visit the United States on March 12-13, mainly to
\ndiscuss the country's economic situation.<\/p>",
