Thai PM arrives tomorrow<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thai Prime Minister Banharn Silpa Archa is
\nscheduled to arrive here tomorrow for a two-day visit that will
\ninclude a courtesy call on President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
"It is has become customary in ASEAN (the Association of
\nSoutheast Asian Nations) for new heads of state to take time to
\nvisit other neighboring states," Minister\/State Secretary
\nMoerdiono said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Banharn was installed as prime minister in July after his
\nChart Thai party,in an alliance with seven other political
\nparties won the election.<\/p>\n
Though this is his first trip as prime minister, Soeharto and
\nBanharn have met several times before. They worked closely during
\nDecember's ASEAN Summit in Bangkok and during last month's Asia-
\nEurope Meeting, also held in the Thai capital.<\/p>\n
ASEAN is a socioeconomic grouping comprised of Brunei,
\nIndonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and
\nVietnam.<\/p>\n
"The main purpose of the visit is to have an exchange of views
\nwith President Soeharto about bilateral relations, regional and
\ninternational developments," Moerdiono explained.<\/p>\n
During his visit here Banharn will be accompanied by his wife,
\nthe Thai deputy prime minister, minister of foreign affairs and
\nminister of agriculture and cooperatives.<\/p>\n
They are scheduled to arrive this morning in a private
\nairplane at Halim Perdanakusuma airport.<\/p>\n
After an official welcome at Merdeka Palace, Banharn will then
\nlay a wreath at the Kalibata Heroes cemetery.<\/p>\n
On Thursday the two leaders will witness the signing of a
\nmemorandum of understanding on economic cooperation and a
\npurchase agreement by their pertinent ministers.<\/p>\n
Banharn will then fly to Yogyakarta to visit the ancient
\nBorobudur temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world.<\/p>\n
According to Moerdiono, while in Yogyakarta the Thai prime
\nminister and his entourage will also conduct a Buddhist prayer
\nsession at Candi Mendut, a temple near Borobudur, before
\nreturning home later in the afternoon.(mds)<\/p>",
