Thai govt vows to return orangutans<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Thai government asserted on Wednesday that the
\ncountry would return smuggled orangutans to Indonesia after it is
\nproven that the primates were smuggled into Thailand through a
\njudicial process, the Thai Embassy in Jakarta said in a statement
\non Thursday.<\/p>\n
It said the government was waiting for judicial decision.<\/p>\n
\"If the judicial process is completed and the orangutans are
\nto be given as state property, the Department of National Park,
\nWildlife and Plant Conservation of Thailand will then proceed
\naccording to the provision of CITES,\" the statement said.<\/p>\n
Article 8 of the CITES Convention states that orangutans
\nillegally brought into a country shall be returned to the state
\nof export or to a rescue center or a place deemed by the
\nManagement Authority as appropriate and consistent with the
\npurpose of the present Convention.<\/p>\n
The embassy said the Thai authorities were monitoring the
\nhealth of the orangutans.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government and wildlife activists have
\nrepeatedly demanded the return of the primates to their original
\nhabitat.<\/p>\n
Orangutans have been declared an endangered species and can be
\nfound in Kalimantan and Sumatra. After a year-long investigation
\nit was found that 150 orangutans were in the hands of Safari
\nWorld Bangkok. --JP<\/p>",
