        "content": "<p>Thai assembly goes for reform<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AFP): The former speaker of Thailand&apos;s house of<br>\nrepresentatives was yesterday elected chairman of an assembly<br>\ncharged with drawing up a new constitution for the country.<\/p>\n<p>Uthai Pimchaichon, 58, a veteran politician, was elected in a<br>\nsecond round of voting to be chairman of the Constitution<br>\nDrafting Assembly, beating out former prime minister Anand<br>\nPanyarachun for the post.<\/p>\n<p>In the first round of voting, five candidates stood for the<br>\npost, but none received the necessary votes for election.<\/p>\n<p>The first sitting of the constitutional assembly came a day<br>\nafter one of the frontrunners for the job, Ukrit Mongkolnavin,<br>\ndropped out of assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly will draft a new constitutional bill within 240<br>\ndays, after which Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has<br>\npledged to dissolve parliament and hold new elections.<\/p>",
