Textile Museum offers interesting holiday programs<\/p>\n

To welcome the school holidays and also Jakarta's 478th
\nAnniversary this month, the Textile Museum is offering a number
\nof interesting batik painting programs in addition to its regular
\nones.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, starting on June 15 (Wednesday), the museum is
\nscheduled start an 11-day exhibition of Madurese batik,
\ndisplaying more than 100 batik fabrics.<\/p>\n
The uniqueness of Madurese batik, compared to those of
\nYogyakarta or Cirebon, is its festive colors using bright yellows
\nand radiant greens.<\/p>\n
Aside from the exhibition, the museum hosts a number of booths
\nselling traditional crafts and also presents a fashion show
\ntitled "Collaboration of Madura and Yogya", parading the works of
\na young Yogyakarta designer Rosso.<\/p>\n
For batik lovers who want to know more about batik from
\nMadura, the museum holds a seminar about Madurese batik
\ndevelopment, featuring batik maker Hasnah Gasim.<\/p>\n
Madura, an island northeast of Java island is popular for its
\ntasty sate and the traditional karapan sapi bull races.<\/p>\n
The people are well-known -- perhaps even notorious -- for
\ntheir rough characters, some say due to the island's arid lands
\nand unforgiving heat.<\/p>\n
However, Madura also has a glorious history of its Sumenep
\nKingdom, which built large ships with magnificent carvings and
\ndeveloped its own batik art.<\/p>\n

\nusing one color for dyeing.

\nRp 50,000<\/p>\n
Making hand-painted batik on 25 x 25 centimeter silk using
\nseveral colors for the dyeing.
\nOne day (three-hour session)
\nRp 75,000<\/p>\n
Making batik using jumputan technique (tying and dying the
\nfabric).
