Text of Soeharto's resignation speech<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): \"During these recent times, I have been following
\ncarefully the development of our country, especially the demands
\nof the people for reforms in all aspects in the life of our
\nnation and state.<\/p>\n
\"Based on my deep understanding of these aspirations, and
\nprompted by the conviction that these reforms need to be
\nimplemented in an orderly, peaceful and constitutional manner for
\nthe sake of maintaining the unity and cohesion of the nation, and
\nthe continuity of the national development, I had earlier
\ndeclared a plan to form the committee for reform and to change
\nthe composition of the Seventh Development cabinet.<\/p>\n
\"But, the reality to date has shown that the committee for
\nreform cannot be formed because there was no adequate response to
\nthe plan to form that committee.<\/p>\n
\"In the wish of implementing these reforms in the best manner
\npossible, I deem that faced with the impossibility of forming the
\ncommittee, changes in the composition of the Seventh Development
\nCabinet are no longer necessary.<\/p>\n
\"Considering the above development, I am of the opinion that
\nit would be very difficult for me to implement in a good manner,
\nduties in governing the state and in development.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, in line with article 8 of the 1945 Constitution
\nand after earnestly taking into consideration the views of the
\nleadership of House of Representatives and the leadership of the
\nfactions in it, I have decided to declare that I have ceased to
\nbe the president of the Republic of Indonesia as of the time I
\nread this on this day, Thursday, May 21, 1998.<\/p>\n
\"I have conveyed this statement, about me stepping down from
\nthe post of president of the Republic of Indonesia, to you,
\nleaders of the House of Representatives, who are also the leaders
\nof the People's Consultative Assembly, during the opportunity for
\na meeting.<\/p>\n
\"In line with article 8 of the 1945 constitution, the vice
\npresident of the Republic of Indonesia, professor, doctor,
\nengineer B.J. Habibie is the one who will conclude the remainder
\nof the presidential term, holder of the mandate of the MPR, for
\n1998-2003.<\/p>\n
\"For the assistance and support of the people while I led the
\nnation and state of Indonesia, I express my thanks and I seek
\nforgiveness if there was any mistakes and shortcomings.<\/p>\n
\"May the Indonesian nation remain victorious with Pancasila
\nand the 1945 constitution.<\/p>\n
\"As of this day too, the Seventh Development Cabinet is
\ndisbanded and to the ministers I express my thanks.<\/p>\n
\"Because conditions do not allow the taking of oath in front
\nof the House of Representatives, to prevent a vacuum of
\nleadership in implementing the governing of the state, the vice
\npresident should now take his oath before the Supreme Court of
\nthe Republic of Indonesia.\"<\/p>",
