        "content": "<p>Test results to be made public<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: A meeting of rectors of the 89 state-universities<br>\nagreed on Sunday to announce the result of the national<br>\nuniversity entrance test on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Test committee member Soesmalijah Soewondo said the<br>\nannouncement would be made through local newspapers and the<br>\nprivate television station TPI.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta participants will see whether they have passed the<br>\ntests in leaflets distributed at Senayan Sports Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 63,000 of 375,450 candidates make it into state<br>\nuniversities this year. Last year, 412,644 took the exams.<\/p>\n<p>Soesmalijah said the rectors agreed that there is a general<br>\ndecline of interest in state universities in many countries. Many<br>\ngraduates of high schools, she pointed out, are now more<br>\ninterested in private universities.<\/p>\n<p>Seats at the 89 state universities here are popular because of<br>\nhigher standards and lower tuition fees. State colleges are<br>\nheavily subsidized by the government.<\/p>\n<p>However, the number of private universities has increased<br>\nrapidly in recent years, from 1,076 in 1993 to 1,228 this<br>\nyear.
