Test finds S. Jakarta man died of bird flu<\/p>\n

A 39-year-old man, who died at the Sulianti Saroso Hospital in
\nNorth Jakarta on Tuesday evening, was confirmed by local medical
\nsources to have been infected by the avian influenza virus.<\/p>\n
Spokesman and head of the bird flu surveillance unit of the
\nSulianti Saroso Hospital, Ilham Patu, said that tests by the
\nMinistry of Health's laboratory suggested that the man, who lived
\nin Kemang Timur, Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta, was infected by
\nthe bird flu virus.<\/p>\n
\"Several tests at the ministry's laboratory confirmed that he
\ndied from bird flu. During our treatment, he also showed symptoms
\nof bird flu. However, we will wait for the WHO-sanctioned
\nlaboratory to confirm his status,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
If confirmed, the man would be the 10th fatality from avian
\ninfluenza in Indonesia, while an eight-year-old boy who died on
\nThursday was suspected of being the country's 11th victim.<\/p>\n
To date, there have been 14 confirmed human bird flu cases in
\nIndonesia, with nine deaths.<\/p>\n
The man, who worked as a security guard at one of the city's
\nprestigious housing complexes in Kemang, South Jakarta, died on
\nTuesday evening, a day after being transferred to Sulianti Saroso
\nfrom a hospital in Cilandak, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Ilham said that the man had presented with bird flu symptoms,
\nincluding acute pneumonia and high body temperature.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Health killed ten doves and several chickens
\nliving in the man's neighborhood after they tested positive to
\nthe virus, while blood samples were taken from relatives and
\nneighbors to see if they had contracted the disease.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, and
\nMaritime Affairs Agency found over a dozen of birds infected by
\nbird flu virus in two subdistricts in South Jakarta during
\nsurveillance tests over the weekend.<\/p>\n
A senior official at the agency Adnan Ahmad said on Thursday
\nthat at least two birds tested positive to bird flu in Karet
\nKuningan, and 10 others in Pasangrahan, both in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We concentrated on testing birds in several areas in South
\nJakarta, while next week we will perform tests in several
\nlocations in Central Jakarta. Next targets will be North, East,
\nand West Jakarta. We will prioritize places where many birds are
\nkept,\" he told the Post.<\/p>\n
He said that test results showed that infected birds were
\nfound in all five municipalities in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Earlier, dozens of infected birds were also found in 10
\nsubdistricts in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The agency found dozens of infected birds in Ceger, Utan Kayu,
\nPondok Kelapa, Cipinang Melayu, Kampung Makassar all in East
\nJakarta, while several other infected birds were found in Sunter
\nJaya, North Jakarta, and Kapuk, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
They also found infected birds in Menteng, Pegangsaan, and
\nPetojo, all in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
All of the people who died from bird flu were suspected to
\nhave been infected by the virus by birds and chickens in their
\nneighborhoods.<\/p>",
