Test fails to reveal KPK candidates' track records<\/p>\n

The final test to select five members of the Corruption
\nEradication Commission (KPK) executive body was off to a
\ndisappointing start on Thursday as it failed to dig into the
\ncandidates' track records.<\/p>\n
After the interview of eight candidates, observers, who
\nwatched the entire question and answer session which lasted eight
\nhours, said the 13 members of the KPK selection committee wasted
\nthe chance to recruit clean and reputable anticorruption
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
One of the panel members, Sukamto, a high ranking official
\nwith the National Police, was absent as he is accompanying
\nNational Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar on a visit to Beijing.<\/p>\n
The selection committee featured big names in law such as
\nSupreme Court Criminal Law Director Moegihardjo, Deputy Attorney
\nGeneral for Intelligence Basrief Arif, Ministry of Justice
\nlegislation director Abdulgani Abdullah, top lawyer Todung Mulya
\nLubis, and law professors Indriyanto Seno Adji, Andi Hamzah,
\nLoebby Loeqman, Romli Atmasasmita and Harkristuti Harkrisnowo.<\/p>\n
However, most of them focused their questions on normative
\naspects, such as commitment, leadership, managerial skills and
\nstrategies to combat corruption.<\/p>\n
Teten Masduki, who leads Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW),
\ncriticized the course of the test.<\/p>\n
\"The selection team were supposed to go for something
\ntangible, in particular the candidates' track records or
\nachievements in combating corruption,\" he told reporters.<\/p>\n
Asep Rahmat Fajar of the Coalition of Judiciary Observers
\nconcurred, saying that the interviewers had failed to uncover the
\ncandidates track records.<\/p>\n
\"They did not raise follow-up questions. They were not
\ngrilling the candidates,\" he said.<\/p>\n
During the interview of Insp. Gen. (ret) Momo Kelana, a police
\nofficer turned member of the Public Servants Wealth Report Audit
\nCommission (KPKPN), Harkristuti appeared content with his
\nclarification over a report that accused him of giving false
\nreport of his wealth.<\/p>\n
According to the report, Harkristuti said, Momo has property
\nand other wealth worth Rp 2.3 billion but he only cited Rp 600
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Harkristuti was silent when Momo answered that he had
\nsubmitted his wealth report to KPKPN and that he was preparing a
\nnew one.<\/p>\n
Other candidates undergoing the test were prosecutor M. Yamin
\nand F.X. Herry Sumanta, lawyer-cum-activist Iskandar Sonhadji,
\nKPKPN member Chairul Imam and state auditor S. Rasul.<\/p>\n
Both Teten and Asep said only two or three of the candidates
\ngrilled on Thursday were eligible to sit in the KPK executive
\nbody.<\/p>\n
Romli, who heads the selection committee, said he was content
\nwith the course of the test.<\/p>\n
Eight more candidates are expected to be interviewed on
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
The selection committee will make a shortlist of 10 candidates
\nand submit them to the President on Saturday for approval.<\/p>\n
The President will pass on the names to the House of
\nRepresentatives, who will announce the final five members of KPK
\nexecutive body on Dec. 12.<\/p>\n
There were over 100 people registered with the selection
\ncommittee, which began the selection process in October.
\nCandidates have undergone administrative tests, written an essay
\non their vision and mission and taken a psychological test to
\nqualify for the final test.<\/p>",
