Terrorists oppose Western civilization: Downer<\/p>\n

Terrorism is a threat in every country, as shown by the deadly
\nattack in Bali, Indonesia, Australia's foreign minister said
\nMonday during a visit to Canada.<\/p>\n
\"Both Canadians and Australians have to understand that a lot
\nof these terrorist operations are directed not just against the
\nUnited States but against what we might broadly describe -
\nparticularly in Canada and Australia - as our civilization,\"
\nAlexander Downer said after meeting with Canadian Foreign Affairs
\nMinister Bill Graham.<\/p>\n
Downer was in Canada for two days for what is called the
\nCanada-Australia Dialogue, described as the first in a series of
\nmeetings focusing on bilateral issues. He left Ottawa later
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
An Oct. 12 bomb blast that tore apart a nightclub in Bali
\ntargeted foreign tourists - mostly Australians - and has been
\nattributed to Islamic extremists.<\/p>\n
Downer said the terrorists in Bali, like those who engineered
\nthe attacks in the United States of Sept. 11, are \"motivated by
\ntheir subversion of Islam, their perversion of Islamic beliefs.\"<\/p>\n
\"What they want to do is drive so-called Western influence out
\nof the Islamic world and try to establish sharia, or
\nfundamentalist Taliban-style states or transnational
\norganizations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Whether you're a Canadian or whether you're an Australian or
\nwhether you're an American, you're part of the so-called West,\"
\nhe said. \"There are risks that these people will use us as
\ntargets. We just have to be alive and awake to that.\"<\/p>",
