'Terrorists' accounts frozen'<\/p>\n

The government has begun identifying the bank accounts of seven
\nIndonesian terrorist suspects who are likely to be listed with
\nthe United Nations (UN) Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC).<\/p>\n
The Indonesians -- Yasin Syawal, Imam Samudra, Mukhlas,
\nParlindungan Siregar, Aris Munandar, Agus Dwikarna and Fatur
\nRochman Al-Ghozi -- were among 10 terrorist suspects proposed by
\nthe United States to be listed with the CTC.<\/p>\n
Washington had frozen the accounts of these individuals and
\nsubmitted their names to the UN on Friday. Should there be no
\nobjection within 72 hours, then all member countries will follow
\nsuit.<\/p>\n
Minister for Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirajuda said on Tuesday
\nthat police and Bank Indonesia (BI) authorities had started
\nmonitoring the accounts of the seven suspects and were ready to
\nfreeze them if they located them.<\/p>\n
"This is a standard procedure for all UN members," Hassan
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"The police and Bank Indonesia have the details, but I can say
\nthat there has been some action to stop the flow of funds to
\nthese suspects," he added.<\/p>\n
The minister said once the suspects were listed with the CTC,
\nIndonesia was obliged to seek out and freeze their accounts.<\/p>\n
"We are not complying with the demands of a certain country,
\nbut with the UN, as we are a member of the world organization,"
\nHassan stressed.<\/p>\n
The U.S. said over the weekend that the suspects were linked
\nwith the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist network, which was
\nenlisted at the CTC in November of last year.<\/p>\n
JI has been accused of responsibility for the Oct. 12 Bali
\nbombings last year and the Aug. 5 JW Marriott Hotel bombing in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Under the UN Security Council resolution No.1267\/2001, all
\nmember countries must freeze the assets and accounts of all
\norganizations and individuals enlisted with the CTC as terrorist
\nsuspects.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in New
\nYork Rezlan Izhar Djenie said the CTC was expected to officially
\nannounce the inclusion of the seven suspects with CTC on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
"Should there be no objections from any member, all member
\ncountries will be obliged to freeze the accounts and assets of
\nthese individuals starting Wednesday," Rezlan told The Jakarta
\nPost by phone.<\/p>\n
The diplomat said that so far there are no instructions from
\nJakarta to object to Washington's proposal.<\/p>\n
Hassan said there had been coordination between the police and
\nBank Indonesia regarding the accounts.<\/p>\n
"It is our obligation to monitor their accounts, to see
\nwhether there are flows of funds from outside the country as most
\nof them have been named as terror suspects," Hassan said.<\/p>\n
However, Hassan said that he personally doubted whether they
\nhad any accounts or assets in the U.S.<\/p>\n
"I can hardly imagine that these people from villages have
\nbank accounts in New York," he said.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs
\nSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono said earlier, that the government
\nwas looking at the possibility of freezing their assets.<\/p>\n
Thorough investigation by the Indonesian police force, the
\nAttorney General's Office and other related government
\ninstitutions has already been conducted.<\/p>\n
"Those institutions work quickly and once their work is
\ncompleted they will convey their recommendations to Bank
\nIndonesia," he said.<\/p>",
