Terror against Wardah<\/p>\n
The New Order is back in strength. Evidence of this can be
\nseen, among other things, in the use of terror to intimidate an
\nactivist who has had the courage to exert social control. The
\nperson suffering this terrorization at present is Wardah Hafidz,
\ncoordinator of the Urban Poor Consortium.<\/p>\n
It was Wardah who, as reported by the media, dared to expose
\nthe money politics maneuvers by Golkar and the People's
\nSovereignty Party (PDR). This was done by misappropriating social
\nsafety net money.<\/p>\n
Wardah was not just talking big. This woman went before the
\npublic armed not just with an outspoken tongue but with evidence
\ngathered through investigation. And even though the judiciary
\ninstitutions in this country are still far from fair and
\nprincipled, she declared herself ready to be taken to court over
\nthe matter -- a sensible and civil challenge. But what was the
\nanswer she got back? Terrorism.<\/p>\n
The tools of power that succeeded to preserve the New Order
\nfor so long in the past are once again being applied. Systematic
\nterror is an \"ism\" in itself. It thrives mainly among fascists
\nand in totalitarian political systems. Terrorism in its various
\ngradations can cripple the best of humanitarian aspects. That is
\nwhy terrorism is effective for suppressing criticism, smothering
\ndiscord and purging all opposition to smooth the way for the
\ntotalitarian power to advance.<\/p>\n
How long will this last? This is an immaterial question, since
\nhistory is filled with the graves of fascist regimes and
\ntotalitarian systems.<\/p>\n
