Saudi Arabia has successfully intercepted and destroyed three drones that entered its airspace from Iraq. The incident follows a period of heightened regional instability and previous diplomatic tensions between Riyadh and Baghdad regarding drone incursions.

Saudi Arabia has announced that its air defences intercepted and
destroyed three drones detected entering the country’s airspace from
Iraq. Riyadh has asserted that it will take all necessary measures to
respond to the incident.

Saudi Ministry of Defence spokesperson, Turki al-Maliki, reported on
Monday (18/5/2026) that the foreign drones were shot down on Sunday
(17/5) morning after being detected entering Saudi airspace from Iraqi
territory. Al-Maliki emphasised that the Saudi Kingdom “has the right to
respond at the appropriate time and place.”

“(Saudi Arabia) will take and implement all necessary operational
actions to respond to any attempt to violate sovereignty, security, and
the safety of citizens and residents,” Al-Maliki stated. There has been
no immediate response from Iraqi authorities regarding the matter.

This interception follows an incident last month when the Saudi
Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iraqi Ambassador in Riyadh
concerning what were described as continuous attacks and threats
targeting Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations using drones launched from
Iraq.

On the same day, a drone attack triggered a fire near a nuclear power
plant in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Local authorities reported no
casualties or impact on radiation levels at the site. The Abu Dhabi
Media Office stated that authorities responded to a fire in an
electrical generator outside the perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power
plant complex in the Al Dhafra region, caused by a drone attack, though
the source of the attack was not specified.

Regional tensions have escalated since the United States and Israel
launched large-scale attacks against Iran on 28 February. Tehran
responded with waves of missile and drone attacks against targets in
Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military assets. Iran has also
effectively restricted transit activity in the Strait of Hormuz during
the conflict. In response, the US has imposed a naval blockade since 13
April, targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

A ceasefire suspending hostilities has been in place since 8 April,
mediated by Pakistan. However, subsequent peace negotiations failed to
reach an agreement to end the war permanently. The ceasefire was later
unilaterally extended by US President Donald Trump for an indefinite
period, though Trump maintained that the US naval blockade remains in
effect.
",
