Tension grows as soldier killed in brawl<\/p>\n

One soldier was killed and two others severely injured on Sunday
\nmorning during an attack by a sword-wielding, drunken mob on the
\nDenpasar Moon nightclub here.<\/p>\n
First Corp. I Gusti Ngurah Ketut Suardika died from stab
\nwounds, while First Corp. Tanabudi and First Corp. Celagi were
\nrushed to Sanglah Hospital.<\/p>\n
The Denpasar Police have detained two of the suspected
\nattackers, who are members of a well-known gang, and have
\nquestioned five witnesses in connection with the brawl.<\/p>\n
The national flag at the Wirasatya Bali Military Command was
\nflying at half-staff, while the area around the military housing
\ncomplex was tense, with rumors of a possible retaliatory attack
\nbeing rife.<\/p>\n
"I have assembled my officers and ordered them to keep their
\nmen calm so that there will be no revenge attack. I have also
\ninstructed military intelligence to assist the police in tracking
\ndown those responsible for the killing," Bali Military Commander
\nCol. IGP Buana said.<\/p>\n
A source revealed that one senior military officer had spoken
\nto the gang's leader and asked him to surrender all the attackers
\nto the police or face a military revenge attack. The gang leader
\nreportedly apologized for the incident and expressed his
\nwillingness to comply with the demand.<\/p>\n
The nightclub is located on Jl. Jendral Sudirman, right across
\nthe street from the second largest military installation and
\nhousing complex on the island, which includes the military
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
A witness said the three soldiers were manning the internal
\naffairs post at the military headquarters when at around 6:30
\na.m. they received a report of a violent brawl at the nearby
\nclub.<\/p>\n
"The report said the brawl involved several youths from the
\nmilitary housing complex. The three soldiers rushed to the club
\nto break up the fight," he said.<\/p>\n
In fact, the brawl pitted the club's three security guards
\nagainst dozens of armed men in a drunken state, who are believed
\nto be members of one of the most notorious gangs in Denpasar.<\/p>\n
The gang attacked the newly arrived soldiers with sharp
\nweapons and dumped them at the club's front gate. The club's
\nguards only sustained minor injuries.<\/p>",
