Ten held for Cimanggis explosion<\/p>\n

The Jakarta Police declared 10 people suspects on Monday
\nfollowing a low-explosive blast at a rented house in Cimanggis,
\nDepok, south of Jakarta, early on Sunday morning. Another 17
\npeople who had also been questioned by city police were released
\nlate on Monday.<\/p>\n
The blast, reportedly the result of an accident during a bomb-
\nmaking training session, caused minor damage to the house's roof.
\nNo casualties were reported.<\/p>\n
\"The police are still hunting several other suspects, but so
\nfar, O is the main suspect. We believe he is the bomb-making
\ninstructor and the organizer of the group,\" Jakarta Police chief
\nInsp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara told a press conference.<\/p>\n
A police source identified the suspects as Oman, Ferdiansyah,
\nSyarif Hidayat, Agus Kusnianto, Kamaluddin, Wasis, Candra Pasma,
\nSyamsu M. Arif and Inggrid, the wife of Andri Susanto alias
\nKholid, who is still at large.<\/p>\n
Another suspect, identified as WD, was arrested on Monday
\nbefore 6 p.m., said the city police detectives chief Sr. Comr.
\nMathius Salempang.<\/p>\n
The police seized a total of 31.5 kilograms of potassium
\nchlorate in a 30 kilogram sack and three 0.5 kilogram plastic
\nbags. They also confiscated nine small pipe sections, and another
\nsection of pipe packed with explosives.<\/p>\n
The police also found two plastic bags containing sulfur,
\nfragments from a detonator, a computer notebook, weighing scales,
\nVCDs on jihad (holy war) and a number of documents.<\/p>\n
\"We also took a pen gun from O,\" Makbul said.<\/p>\n
The suspects are reportedly members of a secretive Islamic
\ngroup. They have been living in several rented houses on Gang
\nAbdul No. 87, Jl. Bakti ABRI, Sindang Karsa hamlet, Sukamaju Baru
\nsubdistrict, Cimanggis district, Depok, for the last eight
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
\"We arrested these individuals as they were participating in
\nthe terrorist training,\" Makbul said. \"The suspects told our
\ninvestigators that Sunday's training session was the third they
\nhad attended so far.\"<\/p>\n
He refused to link the blast to the bomb found recently in a
\nmall in Medan, North Sumatra, or the ongoing legislative election
\ncampaign.<\/p>\n
On Sunday at about 10:30 a.m., locals heard the sound of an
\nexplosion in Oman's rented house. They quickly congregated at the
\nscene to find out what had happened to Oman and the other members
\nof \"the black veil group\" -- the name given to the group by
\nlocals as the women members usually wore the burkha (black robe
\ncovering the entire body except the eyes), whenever they appeared
\nin public. The members of the group told the crowd that they were
\nfine and the sound had been caused by an exploding kerosene
\nstove.<\/p>\n
One of the residents, Chief Brig. Gunawan, was suspicious and
\nbroke into the house. Upon smelling and seeing the sulfur and
\nother chemicals, he ordered the 23 people inside the house to
\nassemble in one of the rooms, and called the Depok Police for
\nassistance.<\/p>\n
Police later arrested three other people and brought them all,
\n13 men and 13 women, to Jakarta Police Headquarters for
\nquestioning.<\/p>\n
The police found most of the evidence in a house owned by
\nSugeng Waluyo. Sugeng's first wife, Muliasih, lives in the house
\nalong with her daughter, Inggrid, one of the suspects, and her
\nhusband.<\/p>\n
Locals said the group members were very religious and polite,
\neven though they did not interact actively with other residents.<\/p>\n
\"Those who rented some houses owned by Viktor Simandjuntak
\nsaid they were instant noodle sellers, while others claimed to be
\ndoughnut vendors,\" said Saripudin, a local resident.<\/p>\n
Other locals said the group regularly met on Wednesday
\nevenings and Sunday mornings. They had thought that the group was
\nonly involved in religious activities, and had no inkling that
\nits members were also receiving terrorist training.<\/p>\n
Many houses in the Cimanggis area are rented on a monthly
\nbasis, something that made it easier for the group to move from
\none place to another.<\/p>\n
In July 2002, a house in Kampung Kebayuran, Tapos, Cimanggis,
\nwas used for the assembly of the bomb that rocked the Graha
\nCijantung Mall in East Jakarta. The Jakarta Police claimed the
\nblast was the work of five Acehnese connected with the Free Aceh
\nMovement.<\/p>",
