Ten fashion fallacies to be addressed<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): Many people, especially women, decline to wear
\ncertain types of dress and accessories, fearing that they would
\ninfringe dress norms. In fact, their apprehension is only due to
\na lack of information or misunderstanding of some dress modes,
\nwhich has led, over a long period, to false beliefs becoming
\nestablished.<\/p>\n
What are these fallacies? Below are 10 myths on how to dress
\nthat we have often heard and mistakenly believed.<\/p>\n
1. Black should not be worn in the morning.<\/p>\n
This old view is outdated. The style prevailing in a working
\natmosphere marked by increasing advancement necessitates people
\ngetting dressed in professional attire, in order to look clean
\nand remain smart on all occasions from morning until the end of
\nthe working day.<\/p>\n
Black meets all of these needs and is now preferred by
\nprofessionals, employees, entertainers and those in fashion
\ncircles, because of the dignified appearance it generates. So,
\nblack attire is not meant solely for the evening or for mourning
\noccasions.<\/p>\n
2. Mini skirts don't suit short women.<\/p>\n
This fallacy only makes females of short build subject to
\nfurther discrimination. In fact, short women and brief skirts
\nwith a straight cut to their knees are a good match. By revealing
\nmore of their legs, their bodies will look taller. Short women
\nwill appear even shorter if they wear dresses of a mid-shin
\nlength.<\/p>\n
3. Pants are not suitable for the office.<\/p>\n
It was true in bygone times, when few women went to work.
\nNowadays they are employed in a greater variety of jobs and more
\ndynamic fields of work, which need more practical and close-
\nfitting garments.<\/p>\n
The choice goes to pants, among others. Not all companies
\nallow their staff to wear pants, in fact. As a rule, they are
\nused for non-conservative jobs.<\/p>\n
Pants, however, excludes jeans and culottes. They should look
\nsmart: be made of good material, have a straight cut and be
\ncombined with blazers, jackets or smart blouses. For more serious
\noccasions like high-level meetings, a dress should be the main
\nchoice, rather than pants.<\/p>\n
4. Night gowns must be long.<\/p>\n
What if the mini design comes back in vogue? What if long
\ngowns make short ladies look 'bogged down'? What if short ones
\neven appear beautiful? It's not whether they are long or short
\nthat matters.<\/p>\n
For evening hours, gowns should be of good quality with
\nexpensive-looking material, a right cut as well as a stylish and
\nalluring finish.<\/p>\n
5. Blouses with motifs should not be worn in the office.<\/p>\n
This is an old-fashioned, classical view. Fashion designers
\nand experts now even recommend that working women should go to
\nthe office with motif-adorned blouses so as to look more dynamic,
\nup-to-date, flexible, open and warm.<\/p>\n
Motifs are very diverse these days, some being sweet, gentle
\nand serious enough for work, especially geometric and regular
\nones. You can use them under blazers to avoid gaudiness.<\/p>\n
6. Turtleneck sweaters hide round faces.<\/p>\n
This has been held to be true because turtleneck sweaters are
\nregarded as covering the upper body as far as the neck. It's
\nactually a psychological effect. Users feel that their round
\nfaces are hidden while what happens is the opposite: their faces
\nbecome more clearly defined, as only this part is seen and
\nfocused upon.<\/p>\n
The round shape will look a bit oval if the area from the neck
\nto the chest is partly open, such as that found in V-neck
\nblouses. With this opening, the image of round faces is shifted
\ndownward.<\/p>\n
7. Stockings should only be worn in the evening.<\/p>\n
Nowadays they are even used for work by women of various
\nprofessions, from secretaries to executives. Stockings have
\nbecome popular because of air-conditioned offices and the need to
\nmake women's appearance more smart, notably in large and major
\ncompanies.<\/p>\n
Modest skirts and blouses will look more classy with
\nstockings, as long as they are thin and black, gray or dark blue,
\ninstead of being colorful and thick like fitness training suits.<\/p>\n
8. Diamonds are too flashy as accessories for work.<\/p>\n
Anyway, diamonds are a girl's best friend, says a pop song.
\nDiamond jewelry can therefore accompany office women at work, in
\nthe form of earrings or pendants of small size and carat. Tiny
\njewelry of precious stones will make one's appearance more
\nattractive, modest and gentle in the working environment.<\/p>\n
9. White is taboo for stout women.<\/p>\n
It's true that white creates an impression of a larger body.
\nBut stout women can still wear white blouses behind blazers or
\ndark colored jackets. They won't look any larger. In any case,
\nwhite blouses for work represent a clean, neat and classic image
\nthat is needed both by slim and robust ladies.<\/p>\n
10. Always choose a classic style for working attire.<\/p>\n
This has some truth, but one needs to ensure that the style
\nchosen is suited to one's personality. It's also necessary to
\nkeep abreast of fashion trends to ensure one has an up-to-date
\nappearance.<\/p>\n
Trendy colors or accessories can turn a classic look into a
\nfresh one. For instance, pink blouses are more stylish than pale
\nyellow upper garments, or corsages now widely used will make
\nclassic jackets more up-to-date.<\/p>",
