'Tempo' said to use press principles<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Two expert witnesses told the Central Jakarta
\nDistrict Court on Monday that the Tempo magazine article, 'Is
\nTomy in Tenabang?' had complied with all basic journalistic
\nprinciples and contained no defamatory or provocative
\nsuggestions.<\/p>\n
Communications expert Maswimar Mangiang from the University of
\nIndonesia said the article in question had covered both sides of
\nthe story as it also included responses from parties related to
\npreliminary information in the article.<\/p>\n
Mangiang, who is also chief editor of the Neraca business
\ndaily, said that responses put at the end of the article did not
\nsuggest a particular opinion to readers, but were there merely
\nfor the sake of its logical structure.<\/p>\n
Journalism expert Abdullah Alamhudi from Dr. Soetomo press
\ninstitute said journalists could not be held responsible for
\nmisinterpretation by readers who did not read fully a piece that
\nwas journalistically correct.<\/p>\n
Businessman Tomy Winata sued Tempo chief editor Bambang
\nHarymurti and journalists Ahmad Taufik and T. Iskandar Ali for
\ndefamation and provoking public disorder through the article.
\nThey could face a maximum sentence of 10 years under the Criminal
