Telkomsel to spend big on sevice<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Telkomsel, a global system for mobile
\ncommunication (GSM) operator, will invest Rp 710 billion (US$300
\nmillion) this year to improve the quality of its services, an
\nexecutive said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Telkomsel operations director Garuda Sugardo (right) said in a
\npartnership workshop his company would spend most of the money on
\nincreasing the number of its base transceiver stations (BTS) from
\n120 to 412.<\/p>\n
He said that in installing the BTS the company would cooperate
\nwith its vendors.<\/p>\n
Telkomsel president Koesmarihati Sugondo (center) -- flanked
\nby Motorola Indonesia's operations director Erik von Essen
\n(left) said that with Motorola International Inc. of the United
\nStates, for example, her company would install BTSs in greater
\nJakarta area, West Java, Kalimantan and North Sulawesi with a Rp
\n12 billion investment.<\/p>\n
Besides Motorola, Telkomsel also procures equipment from
\nEricsson of Sweden and Siemens of Germany.<\/p>\n
Garuda said Telkomsel was still inviting other vendors to help
\nimprove its services.<\/p>\n
He said with service improvement Telkomsel, which serves
\n200,000 subscribers, would expand its service to 270 cities
\nthroughout the country and serve about 400,000 subscribers by the
\nend of the year.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, which is the key market for cellular operators,
\nTelkomsel has about 80,000 subscribers, he said.<\/p>\n
Besides Telkomsel, Indonesia also has two other GSM operators
\n-- PT Excelcomindo Pratama and PT Satelindo -- both of which
\nserve about 400,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n
Garuda said Telkomsel needed its vendors' cooperation in
\nresearch development, engineering support, product innovation,
\ntransfer of know-how and maintenance support.<\/p>\n
He said his company aimed to get an ISO-9000 certificate for
\nits service this year and to improve its call success rate.<\/p>\n
Telkomsel is 42.72 percent owned by the state-owned PT Telkom,
\n25 percent by state-owned PT Indosat, 17.28 percent by PTT
\nTelecom of the Netherlands, and 5 percent by the Setdco Group.
