Telkomsel provides Rp 500m for RI SEA Games squad<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Cellular operator Telkomsel signed a memorandum
\nof understanding with the National Sports Council (KONI) on the
\nstate-owned company's deal to provide Rp 500 million (US$44,250)
\nin cash for Indonesia's Southeast Asian (SEA) Games squad.<\/p>\n
The memorandum was signed by KONI chairman Wismoyo
\nArismunandar and Telkomsel president Mulia Tambunan on Monday to
\nseal the financial pledge.<\/p>\n
\"Telkomsel has proven that Indonesian business enterprises are
\nstill strongly committed to supporting the country's dignity
\nthrough sports events despite the ongoing crisis,\" Wismoyo said
\nin a prepared speech.<\/p>\n
\"I hope that Telkomsel and other companies will not only
\nprovide support for occasional events but also more in a
\npermanent way. Next year we will face the 2002 Pusan Asian Games,
\nwhich will also require financial support from the private
\nsector.\"<\/p>\n
So far, KONI has collected Rp 28.5 billion of the Rp 48.6
\nbillion needed for its final preparation for the Sept. 8 to Sept.
\n17 Games.<\/p>\n
Tambunan said Telkomsel opted to provide financial support as
\nKONI desperately needed cash to finance its contingent to Kuala
\nLumpur.<\/p>\n
\"We'll also help promote the event by issuing a series of
\nSimpati pre-paid cards bearing the pictures of four sports:
\nboxing, judo, rowing and volleyball,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The sports were chosen considering their achievements as well
\nas a bid to popularize them.\"<\/p>\n
Last year, Telkomsel provided 100 post-paid kartuHALO cards
\nworth Rp 3 million for each member of the Indonesian contingent
\nat the Sydney Olympics.<\/p>\n
KONI spokesman Ahmed Solichin said the SEA Games ruling
\ncommittee has decided that athletes will be allowed to wear
\nsponsors' emblems on their sportswear.<\/p>\n
\"This means that our sponsors receive better exposure as the
\nathletes are allowed to wear the sportswear at medal presentation
\nceremonies,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In a separate development, KONI vice chairman Arie Sudewo told
\nreporters that KONI would soon adjust itself according to newly-
\nsigned presidential Decree No.72\/2001 citing that KONI will hold
\nthe responsibility over both amateur and professional sports.<\/p>\n
\"First, KONI must adjust its statute and by-laws to include
\nprofessional sports in KONI following the new presidential
\ndecree. There will also be several other consequences for amateur
\nsports,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"KONI must also change its structure or establish a new
\ndivision to handle professional sports.\"<\/p>\n
Arie also talked of the importance of having discussions with
\nmembers of the House of Representatives Commission VI on human
\nresources and religious affairs regarding the deliberation of a
\nsports law.<\/p>\n
\"Actually, a presidential decree is issued after a law is
\npassed to provide detailed regulations. But this time the
\ndetailed regulations preceded the law,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"That's why we need to coordinate with House members to avoid
