Telkom's increased rates<\/p>\n

Many telephone subscribers have protested the new rates
\nintroduced by Telkom telephone company. Even House Of
\nRepresentative members have joined in the protests. However, the
\nTelkom board of directors remains intransigent in its shocking
\ndecision.<\/p>\n
The decision will result in many customers withdrawing their
\nsubscriptions. Their number will exceed the number of those
\ncanceling their subscriptions due to the economic crisis (tens of
\nthousands of customers). In three or four months' time it will be
\nknown whether the increased rates yield a higher revenue for
\nTelkom or not.<\/p>\n
In the event of a reduction in Telkom's revenue, its directors
\nmust resign from the board as a consequence of their decision.<\/p>\n
The community is well aware that during the New Order regime
\nTelkom's operations were interfered with. In the 1970s the use of
\nthe Palapa satellite to replace the existing system was
\nquestioned. The problem was that economically the use of a
\nsatellite entailed high cost. The debate was closed by the then
\nminister of trade Soemitro Djojohadikusumo who said that the
\ndecision to use a satellite was a \"political decision\".<\/p>\n
Satellites of subsequent generations had higher capacities,
\nfar above the capacity needed. It was a waste. We were coaxed
\ninto financing their surveys in saying yes to businesses that
\nwere a burden to the people.<\/p>\n
Again, the burden of the high cost is charged to the community
\neven though we are experiencing an economic crisis. What is even
\nmore saddening is that all state-owned companies experience the
\nsame fate: the state electricity company PLN, the banks, the
\nports and the mines. Now it is the turn of Telkom. Who is
\nresponsible?<\/p>\n
