Telkom unveils vandal-beating ploy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Learning that its public payphones have
\nrepeatedly been the target of vandals, the Jakarta office of PT
\nTelekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) has decided to install phone
\nbooths in protected areas, an official said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"We'll continue to provide public telephones, but only in
\nplaces where there are people responsible for taking care of
\nthem,\" Telkom Jakarta's external public relation official Asep
\nTatang told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
\"We'll provide free telephone lines to operators of public
\nareas, such as restaurants and beauty salons, but they have to
\nprovide the telephones themselves.\"<\/p>\n
By doing so, Asep said, the continuation of the service is
\nensured because the operators will report cases of malfunction
\ndirectly to PT Telkom. They will also look after the facility.<\/p>\n
\"Many public telephones were damaged because of improper use
\nor mistreatment,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"We have urged the public to report any damages of telephones
\nthey find. They can call a number listed inside the phone
\nbooths,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Data at Telkom Jakarta shows there were 28,750 units of
\nmulti-coin public telephones in use in the city in 1999, 7,900 of
\nwhich were damaged. The office has only been able to repair 6,570
\nof them.<\/p>\n
Most often the damages were found at telephone terminals or in
\ntelephone booths in public areas, some 5,000 units.<\/p>\n
Cooperatives<\/p>\n
He said that while considering the significant number of
\ndamaged telephones in the capital, Telkom Jakarta had been forced
\nto find strategies that would enable it to continue its services,
\nlike working together with the cooperatives at subdistrict units.<\/p>\n
\"We need the cooperatives' help to ensure good treatment for
\nthe telephones in their areas, which include reporting damages
\nand keeping the telephones clean,\" he said, adding that the
\nprogram had been implemented in 1994.<\/p>\n
In return, Asep said, the cooperatives receive 10 percent of
\nthe revenue derived from public telephones in their respective
\nareas.<\/p>\n
Another strategy, initiated in 1996, is to shelter two or more
\ntelephones in a booth near various civil defense posts, which
\nalso serves as a way of monitoring the people using the facility.
