Telkom to produce fiber optic cables<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Telkom is planning to set up
\nsubsidiaries with private firms in the multimedia and optical
\nfiber sectors, Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications
\nJoop Ave said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The firm is currently preparing multimedia business and
\nplanning to expand fiber optic networks to improve its service
\nand competitive edge, Joop said in a hearing with the House of
\nRepresentatives's Commission V on transportation, public housing,
\ntourism, post and telecommunications.<\/p>\n
\"Telkom has signed several memorandums of understanding with
\nprivate firms in the multimedia businesses,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Joop said after the hearing that Telkom was also allowed to
\nestablish other subsidiaries to manufacture optical fiber. \"Since
\nfiber optic is part of the telecommunications industry, the
\nbusiness will support Telkom's operations.\"<\/p>\n
Telkom's president, Asman A. Nasution, said yesterday that
\nTelkom preferred domestic private firms as its partners.<\/p>\n
Telkom currently has two subsidiaries, PT Indonusa Telemedia
\nand PT Multimedia Nusantara. Telkom has a 35 percent stake in
\nIndonusa and 31 percent ownership of Multimedia.<\/p>\n
Telkom plans to install down optical fiber in replacing its
\nconventional cable networks. The project will include fiber in
\nthe loop, fiber in the curb and fiber in home installations.<\/p>\n
Satellite slot<\/p>\n
Joop also announced yesterday that the International
\nTelecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva had granted Indonesia 20
\nslots for the country's satellites in orbit.<\/p>\n
\"We still have to negotiate with ITU for the utilization of
\nthe satellite slots.\"<\/p>\n
In developing its telecommunications network, Indonesia also
\nrelies on the satellite system to unify the archipelago, which is
\nlocated at 95 degrees and 141 degrees longitude.<\/p>\n
Telkom, PT Satelindo, PT ACeS, PT Multi Media Asia, PT Pasifik
\nSatelit Nusantara and PT Media Citra Indostar are licensed to
\noperate satellites.<\/p>\n
Indonesia currently operates five satellites, consisting of
\ntwo Palapa-B series, two Palapa C series and one Palapa Pacific.<\/p>\n

\nPurawidjaja said Indonesia would need at least 27 slots by 1999.<\/p>\n
\"As we are entering the multimedia business which uses
\nsatellites, we have to secure, if possible, more than 30 slots.
\nBut the space is too crowded with spacecraft,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesia would also develop the Nusantara 21, a US$15
\nbillion project using satellites which would link the archipelago
\nthrough a high-tech information and telecommunications network.<\/p>\n
Joop also said that approval had been given for state-owned PT
\nPos Indonesia to acquire shares in privately-owned Bank Rajawali.
\n\"The bank will then concentrate on small and micro financing
\nplans,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Bank Rajawali president Robert Leman told The Jakarta Post
\nyesterday that the Ministry of Finance had approved in principle
\nthe sale of 25 percent of the shares in the bank, a unit of the
\nRajawali Group which is controlled by businessman Peter Sondakh.<\/p>\n
He said Pos Indonesia would buy 10 percent of the shares, the
\ncompany's Pension Fund Foundation would purchase 10 percent and
\nTelkom's Pension Fund Foundation would take the remainder.<\/p>\n
