        "content": "<p>Telkom to produce fiber optic cables<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Telkom is planning to set up<br>\nsubsidiaries with private firms in the multimedia and optical<br>\nfiber sectors, Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications<br>\nJoop Ave said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is currently preparing multimedia business and<br>\nplanning to expand fiber optic networks to improve its service<br>\nand competitive edge, Joop said in a hearing with the House of<br>\nRepresentatives's Commission V on transportation, public housing,<br>\ntourism, post and telecommunications.<\/p>\n<p>\"Telkom has signed several memorandums of understanding with<br>\nprivate firms in the multimedia businesses,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Joop said after the hearing that Telkom was also allowed to<br>\nestablish other subsidiaries to manufacture optical fiber. \"Since<br>\nfiber optic is part of the telecommunications industry, the<br>\nbusiness will support Telkom's operations.\"<\/p>\n<p>Telkom's president, Asman A. Nasution, said yesterday that<br>\nTelkom preferred domestic private firms as its partners.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom currently has two subsidiaries, PT Indonusa Telemedia<br>\nand PT Multimedia Nusantara. Telkom has a 35 percent stake in<br>\nIndonusa and 31 percent ownership of Multimedia.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom plans to install down optical fiber in replacing its<br>\nconventional cable networks. The project will include fiber in<br>\nthe loop, fiber in the curb and fiber in home installations.<\/p>\n<p>Satellite slot<\/p>\n<p>Joop also announced yesterday that the International<br>\nTelecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva had granted Indonesia 20<br>\nslots for the country's satellites in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>\"We still have to negotiate with ITU for the utilization of<br>\nthe satellite slots.\"<\/p>\n<p>In developing its telecommunications network, Indonesia also<br>\nrelies on the satellite system to unify the archipelago, which is<br>\nlocated at 95 degrees and 141 degrees longitude.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom, PT Satelindo, PT ACeS, PT Multi Media Asia, PT Pasifik<br>\nSatelit Nusantara and PT Media Citra Indostar are licensed to<br>\noperate satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia currently operates five satellites, consisting of<br>\ntwo Palapa-B series, two Palapa C series and one Palapa Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>Director General of Post and Telecommunications Djakaria<br>\nPurawidjaja said Indonesia would need at least 27 slots by 1999.<\/p>\n<p>\"As we are entering the multimedia business which uses<br>\nsatellites, we have to secure, if possible, more than 30 slots.<br>\nBut the space is too crowded with spacecraft,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Indonesia would also develop the Nusantara 21, a US$15<br>\nbillion project using satellites which would link the archipelago<br>\nthrough a high-tech information and telecommunications network.<\/p>\n<p>Joop also said that approval had been given for state-owned PT<br>\nPos Indonesia to acquire shares in privately-owned Bank Rajawali.<br>\n\"The bank will then concentrate on small and micro financing<br>\nplans,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bank Rajawali president Robert Leman told The Jakarta Post<br>\nyesterday that the Ministry of Finance had approved in principle<br>\nthe sale of 25 percent of the shares in the bank, a unit of the<br>\nRajawali Group which is controlled by businessman Peter Sondakh.<\/p>\n<p>He said Pos Indonesia would buy 10 percent of the shares, the<br>\ncompany's Pension Fund Foundation would purchase 10 percent and<br>\nTelkom's Pension Fund Foundation would take the remainder.<\/p>\n<p>\"But we are still negotiating several issues,\" he said.
