Telkom to prepare multimedia services<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Relying on its digital and fiber-optic networks,
\nstate-owned domestic telecommunications operator PT Telkom plans
\nto develop multimedia services in cooperation with private firms.<\/p>\n
Telkom's president, Setyanto P. Santosa, said yesterday that
\nhis company had agreed with PT Telekomindo Primabhakti and PT
\nRajawali Citra Televisi (RCTI) to develop the services.<\/p>\n
\"Telkom has well-prepared infrastructure potential for voice,
\nvisual and image telecommunications. Through partnership, we will
\nenter multimedia services,\" Setyanto said, adding that multimedia
\nwould be a promising business in the future.<\/p>\n
Telekomindo is a private cellular telecommunications operator.
\nTelekomindo, 10-percent owned by Telkom, is controlled by the
\nRajawali Group, which has ties with both businessman Peter
\nSondakh and the Bimantara Group, which owns the RCTI television
\nstation.<\/p>\n
Setyanto said yesterday that the agreement for the development
\nof multimedia services was just a preliminary arrangement.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Telekomindo's vice president, Peter
\nDjatmiko, said yesterday that his company will launch global
\nsystem for mobile (GSM) cellular telephone services in Jakarta
\nand Surabaya, East Java, in June next year.<\/p>\n
\"We plan some 100,000 lines in Jakarta and 50,000 lines in
\nSurabaya,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In August, Telekomindo was granted a permit to become
\nIndonesia's third GSM operator. The two other GSM operators are
\nPT Satelindo, which is owned by Bimantara, DeTeMobil of Germany,
\nTelkom and PT Indosat; and PT Telkomsel, which is owned by Telkom
\nand Indosat.<\/p>\n
Peter said that Telekomindo has set up a new company called PT
\nExcelcomindo to run the GSM business in cooperation with Nynex of
\nthe United States, Mitsui of Japan, the Asian Infrastructure Fund
\nand several local partners, including Santana Telekomindo, the
\nArmed Force's Kartika Eka Paksi Foundation and the Tridaya
\nFoundation.<\/p>\n
He said that the share ownership is still being discussed
\namong the parties.<\/p>\n
\"We plan to operate in the capitals of each of the country's
\n27 provinces within the next five years. We expect to list some
\n100,000 subscribers by 1997,\" he said.<\/p>\n
There are currently about 200,000 cellular telephone
\nsubscribers in Indonesia. (icn)<\/p>",
