Telkom targets 1.2 million Telkom Flexi customers this year<\/p>\n

State-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom is targeting
\nsome 1.2 million new customers this year for its newly-launched
\ncellular phone service called Telkom Flexi.<\/p>\n
Telkom director for business development Garuda Sugardo was
\nquoted by Antara over the weekend as saying that demand for the
\nnew service had been very strong.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that last year, the company managed to sell
\nsome 500 Flexi lines despite its early debut.<\/p>\n
Garuda said that to support the greater number of customers,
\nTelkom would develop some 529 BTS (base transceiver station) in
\n51 cities around the country.<\/p>\n
Telkom Flexi is a CDMA (code division multi access)-based
\ncellular phone service, which uses the cheaper rates of fixed-
\nline telephones.<\/p>\n
The new service is seen as a threat by most providers of GSM
\n(global system for mobile communications)-based cellular phone
\noperators. The result has been a price war that has seen
\nsubscription rates and rates for communicating via GSM cellulars
\nfall.<\/p>\n
With various superior features, like a data transmitting speed
\nof 144 kilobytes per second, voice quality similar to fixed-line
\ntelephones, texting, voice mail, calling line identification
\n(CLI) and many other facilities, Telkom Flexi is quickly making
\nsignificant inroads in the telecommunications market, especially
\nbecause the rates applied are the same as those for fixed-line
\ntelephones.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Garuda said that in the future, Telkom would no
\nlonger develop the fixed-wireline telecommunications system
\nbecause of the high production cost.<\/p>\n
