Telkom rings wrong number with kiosks<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Operators of the 253 telecommunications kiosks
\nhere have complained of carelessness by PT Telkom in issuing new
\nlicenses without first considering interests of existing
\nbusinesses.<\/p>\n
They charged on Tuesday that the state telecommunications
\nfirm's negligence had led to the proliferation of the kiosks,
\nlocally known as Wartel, which in turn caused a significant drop
\nin their earnings.<\/p>\n
\"There are many new kiosks around mine now, which has caused a
\ndecline in our daily turnover,\" said Djoko, the owner of a kiosk
\non Jl. Siliwangi.<\/p>\n
Leman, who operates a business Jl. Baru in Cimanggu, added:
\n\"My turnover has dropped about 25 percent since the appearance of
\nthe new kiosks here.\"<\/p>\n
The operators said they hoped Telkom would be more
\ndiscriminating in its license issuance by studying an area first.<\/p>\n
\"Otherwise, many of the existing operators will go bankrupt
\nand the business will be taken over by those with big funding,\"
\nLeman said.<\/p>\n
He said the meeting of the Bogor Association of Wartel
\nOperators (APWI) -- held on Sunday and Monday -- also urged
\nTelkom to slightly reduce its designated take of kiosks' earnings
\nto help operators weather the financial crisis.<\/p>\n
Telkom has been asked to collect 85 percent, instead of the
\ncurrent 92.5 percent, on tolls on international calls made from
\nkiosks.<\/p>\n
Local Telkom spokesman Harismaya declined to comment
\nspecifically on the operators' complaints.<\/p>\n
\"It's valuable input for us. We'll discuss these matters and
