        "content": "<p>Telkom plans linkup with S'pore SingTel<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom)<br>\nsaid on Thursday that it would cooperate with Singapore Telecom<br>\n(Singtel) to build a submarine cable network in its bid to enter<br>\nthe international direct dialing (IDD) market in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom director of operations and marketing Komarudin<br>\nSastrakoesoemah said that technically Telkom would not face many<br>\ndifficulties in entering the IDD market as it had invested in<br>\ncable network infrastructures and satellite transmissions with<br>\nthe Telkom I satellite, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>Komarudin said SingTel was eager to extend its submarine cable<br>\nnetwork across the world, including through Indonesia, and was<br>\nready to invest.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the new telecommunications law to come into effect<br>\non Sept. 8, the government announced last week the earlier<br>\ntermination of Telkom's monopoly over local and domestic long<br>\ndistance call services to 2002 and 2003, from the initial<br>\nschedule of 2010 and 2005 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>State-owned PT Indosat's duopoly over international telephone<br>\nservices, shared with its subsidiary PT Satelindo, will also be<br>\nrevoked one year earlier in 2003 from the initial 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\"This means Telkom could enter the international market a year<br>\nearlier,\" Komaruddin said.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom's strong customer base in the local and domestic long<br>\ndistance markets will enable it to compete with Indosat for a<br>\nshare of the international telephone services market, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The transition from being a domestic to an international<br>\nplayer will require Telkom to change its company regulations and<br>\nobtain consent from shareholders for the change in status,<br>\nKomaruddin said.
