Telkom appoints new directors, commissioners<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In the midst of preparing to float its shares
\ndomestically and internationally, the state-owned domestic
\ntelecommunications firm, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), is
\nhaving its boards of directors and commissioners shaken up.<\/p>\n
Among the 30 officials and executives sworn in by Minister of
\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave at his office here
\nyesterday, Director General for State Company Development of the
\nMinistry of Finance, Martiono Hadianto, was installed as Telkom's
\nchief commissioner, while Setyanto P. Santosa was reassigned as
\nits president.<\/p>\n
Martiono, who replaced Director of Post and Telecommunications
\nDjakaria Purawidjaja as Telkom's chief commissioner, refused to
\ncomment about the government's plan to float the company's shares
\non an international stock market.<\/p>\n
\"There will be a right time to inform you about the plan,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Martiono was originally scheduled to speak at a press
\nconference at his office later yesterday on Telkom's plan to
\nfloat shares abroad. The schedule was suddenly delayed without
\nany reason given.<\/p>\n
Analysts believe that the government might be changing the
\narrangement on the underwriting of Telkom's share issuance.<\/p>\n
Martiono, saying that he would speak about Telkom's plans for
\nthe share issuance later, would only comment that the company,
\nwhich employs a huge number of employees, must make more careful
\npreparations for floating its shares internationally than PT
\nIndosat. The state-owned international telecommunications
\ncompany, Indosat, sold part of its shares on the New York Stock
\nExchange and domestic stock exchanges last year.<\/p>\n
Employees<\/p>\n
Indosat, which successfully floated 25 percent of its shares
\non the New York Stock Exchange, has 1,800 employees.<\/p>\n
Setyanto said that Telkom, which employs 43,000 people
\nthroughout Indonesia, will still have good prospects in floating
\nshares internationally.<\/p>\n
\"We have just begun a restructuring program, in which we are
\nnow operating just seven area offices, instead of 12. Now Telkom
\nhas just four directorates, instead of six,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Setyanto also said that Telkom will continue the restructuring
\nprogram, which is expected enable the company to be more
\nefficient and innovative and to become a world class operator by
\nthe year 2001.<\/p>\n
He said that in 1991, 29 people were employed at Telkom to
\nservice 1,000 telephone lines each, while the current rate is 12
\nfor 1,000 lines.<\/p>\n
\"The rate in developed countries is about four to five for
\n1,000 lines,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Other executives installed by Joop yesterday included Anak
\nAgung Gde Rai as president of the Nusa Dua resort management
\nfirm, PT Bali Tourism Development Corporation, and Bagus Panuntun
\nas president of the temple management firm, PT Taman Wisata Candi
\nBorobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko.<\/p>\n
Telkom's four directors sworn in by Joop yesterday are Dadad
\nKustiwa, Muljohardjoko, Wisnu A. Marantika and John Welly. (icn)<\/p>",
