Telephone sale postponed<\/p>\n
The South Jakarta Telecommunications Office has stopped the
\nsale activities of new telephone lines after its first-day
\ncampaign turned into a traffic snarl yesterday.<\/p>\n
The office said in an announcement yesterday that the number
\nof people who came to apply for new telephone connections at the
\nsales office in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, was beyond
\nexpectation.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Post estimated that by 9:30 a.m. more than one
\nthousand people had arrived, mostly by car, to queue up to apply.
\nThe crowd caused serious traffic congestion around the Lebak
\nBulus area.<\/p>\n
Most people complained that they had been confused by the
\nannouncement concerning the system of distribution by the
\nTelecommunication office.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the head of the Fourth Telecommunication Area, John
\nWilly, whose jurisdiction includes Jakarta, announced yesterday
\nthat the sale activities were postponed until further notice.<\/p>\n
Willy said he will announce the reopening and new method of
\napplying at a later date. He said that only people whose
\nresidential area has been connected by telephone lines will be
\nserved.<\/p>\n
Willy apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused.
