Telephone bills and public rights<\/p>\n

The government has approved a maximum increase of 28 percent
\nin local telephone charges and a minimum decrease of 10 percent
\nin long distance charges.<\/p>\n
Previously, the Indonesian Telecommunications Regulatory Board
\nrecommended that the Minister of Communications allow a maximum
\nrise in fixed telephone charges of only 15 percent this year.<\/p>\n
In any case, I would like to point out that PT Telkom as the
\nholder of a monopoly over fixed line services should not raise
\ntelephone charges as it booked a profit of around Rp 8 trillion
\nin 2003.<\/p>\n
In addition, the telephone charge increase means that the
\ngovernment is giving priority to the demands of the operator
\n(Telkom) rather than the rights of the public to the operator's
\nservices.<\/p>\n
The public's right to the company's services involves not only
\nlong-distance services but also local telephone connections. It
\nis in fact unnecessary to increase charges as telephone users
\nalready pay subscriptions for the service.<\/p>\n
