        "content": "<p>Telekom Malaysia iffy about Kalimantan deal<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): State-owned Telekom Malaysia is<br>\nreassessing a major telecommunications joint-venture with<br>\nIndonesia's PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) in Kalimantan, a<br>\nreport said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"If we need to, we are ready to abort the venture,\" Telekom's<br>\nChief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mohamed Said<br>\nMohamed Ali was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times daily.<\/p>\n<p>PT Telkom had informed the Jakarta Stock Exchange on Monday<br>\nthat the project, to provide phone lines in its northern region<br>\nof Kalimantan, was delayed because of differences with its<br>\nMalaysian partner.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was to install and operate 237,000 phone lines in<br>\nKalimantan by 1999. The operators would then be given operating<br>\nrights for these lines for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>PT Telkom told the Jakarta bourse Telekom may be replaced with<br>\nanother foreign partner in its PT Daya Mitra Consortium if the<br>\ndispute over \"internal problems\" was not resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Other members of the consortium are Indonesia's PT Intidaya<br>\nSistelindomitra, the ALatieF Corporation and tea producers'<br>\ncooperative Kopthindo as well as Singapore-based American<br>\nInternational Group Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Telekom officials said they were still studying the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will review our position and act accordingly,\" Mohamed<br>\nSaid said.<\/p>\n<p>Telekom shares were 30 sen lower at 20.30 ringgit (US$8.12) on<br>\nthe local bourse at noon yesterday.<\/p>",
