Telekom Malaysia iffy about Kalimantan deal<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): State-owned Telekom Malaysia is
\nreassessing a major telecommunications joint-venture with
\nIndonesia's PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) in Kalimantan, a
\nreport said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"If we need to, we are ready to abort the venture,\" Telekom's
\nChief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mohamed Said
\nMohamed Ali was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times daily.<\/p>\n
PT Telkom had informed the Jakarta Stock Exchange on Monday
\nthat the project, to provide phone lines in its northern region
\nof Kalimantan, was delayed because of differences with its
\nMalaysian partner.<\/p>\n
The deal was to install and operate 237,000 phone lines in
\nKalimantan by 1999. The operators would then be given operating
\nrights for these lines for 15 years.<\/p>\n
PT Telkom told the Jakarta bourse Telekom may be replaced with
\nanother foreign partner in its PT Daya Mitra Consortium if the
\ndispute over \"internal problems\" was not resolved.<\/p>\n
Other members of the consortium are Indonesia's PT Intidaya
\nSistelindomitra, the ALatieF Corporation and tea producers'
\ncooperative Kopthindo as well as Singapore-based American
\nInternational Group Inc.<\/p>\n
Telekom officials said they were still studying the situation.<\/p>\n
\"We will review our position and act accordingly,\" Mohamed
\nSaid said.<\/p>\n
Telekom shares were 30 sen lower at 20.30 ringgit (US$8.12) on
\nthe local bourse at noon yesterday.<\/p>",
