Telecommunications in eastern regions<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The development of telecommunication and tourist
\nfacilities in eastern provinces will be accelerated in
\ncooperation with foreign parties, Minister of Tourism, Post and
\nTelecommunications Joop Ave said.<\/p>\n
He told reporters after a hearing with Commission V of the
\nHouse of Representatives yesterday that the development of the
\nfacilities will be part of the government's programs on the
\npromotion of development in the provinces, which are economically
\nless developed than western provinces.<\/p>\n
The government has set up a Council for the Development of
\nEastern Indonesia, which yesterday held its first plenary session
\nat the Bina Graha presidential office. The council groups 13
\nministers and a number of experts, including former governors of
\neastern provinces.<\/p>\n
Joop told Commission V members in yesterday's hearing that the
\ncouncil has set up four working groups, which will work until
\n1998.<\/p>\n
"I will, very soon, discuss with other council members the
\ndetails of telecommunications development programs because we
\nknow that telecommunication facilities are vital for the
\ndevelopment of other business facilities," said Joop, who is a
\nmember of the council.<\/p>\n
He said that in the tourism industry, he will propose for the
\nestablishment of new sub-regional cooperation with neighboring
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
Indonesia so far has established three sub-regional
\ncooperation involving Thailand and Malaysian in its western part,
\nSingapore and Malaysia in its northern part and Malaysia, Brunei
\nand the Philippines in its eastern part.<\/p>\n
Joop said that Australia is inviting Indonesia to form an
\nArafura cooperation area, which will involve Irian Jaya of
\nIndonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia itself.<\/p>\n
"The idea is attractive and we can form other zones of sub-
\nregional cooperation in eastern parts of the country with other
\nPacific countries," he said, adding that Indonesia, Papua New
\nGuinea and Australia have held a discussion on Australia's
\nproposal.<\/p>\n
A second meeting to discuss the planned Arafura cooperation
\nzone will be held in Darwin later this month, he said. (icn)<\/p>",
