        "content": "<p>Telecommunications in eastern regions<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The development of telecommunication and tourist<br>\nfacilities in eastern provinces will be accelerated in<br>\ncooperation with foreign parties, Minister of Tourism, Post and<br>\nTelecommunications Joop Ave said.<\/p>\n<p>He told reporters after a hearing with Commission V of the<br>\nHouse of Representatives yesterday that the development of the<br>\nfacilities will be part of the government&apos;s programs on the<br>\npromotion of development in the provinces, which are economically<br>\nless developed than western provinces.<\/p>\n<p>The government has set up a Council for the Development of<br>\nEastern Indonesia, which yesterday held its first plenary session<br>\nat the Bina Graha presidential office. The council groups 13<br>\nministers and a number of experts, including former governors of<br>\neastern provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Joop told Commission V members in yesterday&apos;s hearing that the<br>\ncouncil has set up four working groups, which will work until<br>\n1998.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I will, very soon, discuss with other council members the<br>\ndetails of telecommunications development programs because we<br>\nknow that telecommunication facilities are vital for the<br>\ndevelopment of other business facilities,&quot; said Joop, who is a<br>\nmember of the council.<\/p>\n<p>He said that in the tourism industry, he will propose for the<br>\nestablishment of new sub-regional cooperation with neighboring<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia so far has established three sub-regional<br>\ncooperation involving Thailand and Malaysian in its western part,<br>\nSingapore and Malaysia in its northern part and Malaysia, Brunei<br>\nand the Philippines in its eastern part.<\/p>\n<p>Joop said that Australia is inviting Indonesia to form an<br>\nArafura cooperation area, which will involve Irian Jaya of<br>\nIndonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia itself.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The idea is attractive and we can form other zones of sub-<br>\nregional cooperation in eastern parts of the country with other<br>\nPacific countries,&quot; he said, adding that Indonesia, Papua New<br>\nGuinea and Australia have held a discussion on Australia&apos;s<br>\nproposal.<\/p>\n<p>A second meeting to discuss the planned Arafura cooperation<br>\nzone will be held in Darwin later this month, he said.
