Teetotal Brunei arrests boozers<\/p>\n
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (AP): On a campaign against illegal
\ndrinking, Brunei authorities arrested 10 people in a series of
\nraids this week, including three British soldiers and two
\npolicemen, officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Since Islamic Brunei banned the import and sale of alcohol
\nfive years ago, a thriving underground market has grown. Smuggled
\nbeer is served secretly in teapots in some restaurants and young
\nmen gather late at night at private clubs to drink.<\/p>\n
Only foreigners are allowed to bring in a few bottles of
\nalcohol, but have to fill in a form at the airport to declare
\ntheir un-Islamic cargo. They cannot drink in public or offer it
\nto a Moslem.<\/p>\n
\"We are determined to clean up the place and the current blitz
\nwill continue,\" said an official of the Royal Brunei Customs,
\nspeaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n
Three British soldiers deployed in Brunei were arrested for
\ndrinking beer at a cafe and two women were detained for stashing
\nbeer in their homes, said customs officials speaking on condition
\nof anonymity.<\/p>",
