Teenager married a transvestite<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Shockwaves of disbelief are rippling through an
\nEast Kalimantan community after it emerged a local teenager's
\nbride is in fact a transvestite, reports said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The controversy burst only two days after their wedding was
\nformalized last weekend by a Moslem cleric and celebrated at an
\nextravagant party in the capital Samarinda.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people attending the party thrown by the 18-year-
\nold bridegroom went home believing nothing was amiss. Then on
\nMonday rumors started circulating that the 38-year-old bride was
\nin fact a drag queen.<\/p>\n
Moslem Ulemas Council officials were the first to condemn the
\nunion as illegal because Islam only recognizes marriages between
\na man and a woman.<\/p>\n
\"If this sort of marriage is allowed, it would mean we had set
\nthe clock back to the age of pagan ignorance,\" local ulemas
\ncouncil chief Sabranity was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
He said he would find out why the couple's relatives and the
\ngovernment allowed the bizarre marriage between the teenager and
\nthe transvestite, who runs a beauty parlor.<\/p>\n
Protests also came from Ms. Komariah, who oversees cooperation
\namong women's organization in Samarinda.<\/p>\n
\"The East Kalimantan public cannot accept the marriage because
\nit wasn't compatible with the prevailing norms in society,\" she
