Teenage scientists awarded<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Institute of Sciences (LIPI)
\nawarded eight school children with prizes on Wednesday at the
\nannual Scientific Contest for Teenagers (LKIR) in a ceremony
\ntelevised on state television station TVRI.<\/p>\n
Agung Pranowo, chairman of the jury, read out the winners'
\nnames, witnessed by LIPI chairman Taufik Abdullah.<\/p>\n
The contest, of which there were 15 finalists, was divided
\ninto three categories, namely technology, pure science and social
\nscience.<\/p>\n
In technology, the jury decided not to award any first prizes.<\/p>\n
However, two budding scientists were each awarded second prize
\n-- Daniel Kurniadi of Dharma Mulya Christian Senior High School
\nin Surabaya, East Java, and Pungky Lestari of YPJ Kuala Kencana
\nJunior High School in Timika regency, Irian Jaya. The third prize
\nwent to Rahajeng Naweswari Tanjungputri of YPVDP High School in
\nBontang, East Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
In pure science, Ni Nyoman Mestri Agustini of SMUN 1 High
\nSchool in Singaraja regency, Bali, took the first prize; Erlin
\nTrihartanti of SMUN 1 High School in Merauke regency, Irian Jaya,
\ncame second; and Gatot Widiharto of SMUN 1 High School in Jombang
\nregency, East Java, won the third prize.<\/p>\n
In social science, Fita Mahardiwi of SMUN 1 High School in
\nPonorogo, East Java, won the first prize; Yosefin Mariana Kaize
\nof SMUN 1 High School in Merauke, Irian Jaya, took second; while
\nHari Nurcahyo of YPVDP High School in Bontang, East Kalimantan,
\ncame third.<\/p>\n
Each winner received Rp 3.5 million (US$412) and a letter of
\nrecommendation from LIPI to enter the state university of their
\nchoice.<\/p>\n
Second place was awarded Rp 2.5 million, while those finishing
\nthird got Rp 1.5 million each.<\/p>\n
In addition to the prize money, each winner also received
\ntrophies, certificates, souvenirs and books on technology from
